A couple of years ago, a little girl named Megan Kanka in
northern New Jersey was brutally raped and murdered by some
scumbag who had just moved into her neighborhood. The scumbag
was a once convicted child molester. It didn't take him long to
lure Megan into his home...
To say that the community was outraged would be an
understatement. I also feel that making this statement is sort of
an insult. I mean, of course everyone was outraged. To actually
say that "everyone was outraged" somehow implies that there's a
chance no one cared, and that's impossible. When something this
horrible happens, everyone gets angry, and everyone cries.
This one instance above many others led to a law in NJ State
which is referred to as "Megan's Law". Megan Kanka was not the
only child that was ever abused or murdered by a once convicted
child molester in NJ, the country, or the entire world, but this
specific case caught everyone's attention.
The law itself requires once convicted "sex offenders" to
register with police. The township will notify the families in
the community if there is a once convicted "sex offender"
deemed a "threat" to the community living amongst them. The idea is
that if you know where they live, you can tell your kids to stay away
from them. Megan may have had a better chance of being alive today
if the law had been around when she was alive, but it's likely someone
else would have been murdered instead.
"Megan's Law" will not do a single thing except create added
hysteria, mob justice, and give families a false sense of security
when it comes to the safety of their children.
Now, no politician in his right mind would vote against such
a law. It would be instant political suicide. On the other hand,
there are politicians who have profited politically from this mess,
namely Christy Whitman (R), Governor of NJ. (She is undoubtedly the
biggest boob NJ ever had as Governor.) This law did for Whitman
what Iraq did for Bush.
The overwhelming majority of child molesters do not get
caught, therefore they are not 'once convicted'. If they do
at some point get caught, they sometimes speak of hundreds of
children they have hurt in the past. So, this law does not apply to them,
or should I say that this law does not apply to the majority of child
molesters, but at least we can stop those who may re-offend...
It's not true that the majority of convicted child molesters will re-offend once they get out of prison, it's just popular belief. So much so that this page has been hacked on a number of occasions and this statement has been removed and/or changed. What does this mean? Politically generated hysteria. People think there is a pedophile behind every tree, and will vote for a person who says they will all be pointed out if only you but me in office.
If you were notified that a sex offender was moving in to
your neighborhood, what would happen? Do you think the towns
people might try to get that person thrown out of the town?
Well, they may try, but you can't legally do that to someone.
Anyone can live anywhere they want. Do you think that his...
I dunno... car would be damaged? Big deal, right? How about his
home? A fire bomb is easy to make. What about the person himself?
Would he get jumped? Would anyone help him if he did? Would the
police take him seriously? Would they care? Would you?
What would notification prevent? Not much. Would it make
people feel more secure? Of course. Would there be less of a
threat to children? No, just the opposite, actually. A child
that is molested is infinitely more likely to be molested by a
person who has never been convicted of a sexual offence, and that
is fact.
What do you tell a young child to do if you were notified
that your next door neighbor was a once convicted sex offender?
Well, one would hope that you do not tell the child anything less
then you would for any other stranger. What is more likely to happen
is that you would tell the child to "watch out" for the person
because he may "hurt you". This is going to scare the living shit
out of the kid, and chances are, the kid is going to be less
careful when it comes to someone else.
What is a convicted "sex offender"? Well, it's any person
that has been convicted of a sex crime. All convicted child
molesters are sex offenders, but not all sex offenders are child
molesters. Yes indeed, there is more scum out there, like
rapists. They notify for rapists as well, but think about it real
hard for a second. Will knowing who the rapists are stop them
from raping women? If you said yes, you're a fool. People like
that don't think about the consequences, they only care about
instant gratification.
It's also quite peculiar that the law is worded the way it
is. It's not "child molester", but "sex offender". If a "sex
offender" is anyone who has been convicted of a sex crime, we have
to look at some of the sex crimes.
In NJ, it is illegal to engage in sodomy. Most people think
that sodomy is just anal sex, but it is more. Sodomy is anything
that is not vaginal intercourse. This means that oral sex is sodomy,
and it is a crime in NJ. Why was such a silly, unprosecutable law written in the first place? Simple. It's incarnation gave the
state a way to actually charge homosexual men for engaging in
sexual activity with one another. It's a law that is seldom used any more, but it is still on the books, because no one
in Trenton ever thought getting rid of it was worth missing a golf
match. So basically, give or receive a blow job in NJ and you are
a "sex offender".
It's doubtful that the police would ever notify a community
of those who give or receive blow jobs. Sure, guys may tell their
friends, but it's not the same thing. "The girl at 9032 Main
Street? She's on the Blow Job List, John! Let's take a ride!"
I am sure you all think I am reaching for straws here, but am I?
There are those who believe that homosexual men should not,
by law, be allowed to engage in sexual activity. (See where I'm
going here?) You may think it's unnatural, disgusting, an
abomination before God, what have you. (I personally couldn't care
less what someone else does, but that's getting off the subject.)
What if people with those ideas got into power in this country?
Some say they already are. Could they start making acceptations to
the constitutional rights of all Americans according to their
moral code? Smirk if you will, then remember that Colorado
narrowly missed voting in legislation that discriminated against
homosexuals. I am sure that inter-racial relationships would have
been next.
"Yeah yeah yeah, whatever you say, but we're talking about
the scumbag rapists and child molesters out there! They don't
deserve the same rights as we have!" No? What about those who
may have been wrongly accused of a sex crime? What of those who
are just suspected of doing something really screwed up? If you
think that it hardly ever happens, you are so wrong. It happens
more often then anyone would like to admit.
When it comes right down to it, do I want to know if there
are convicted sex offenders living in my community? Yes, yes I
do, even though I do not have children. My brother does, four
girls, and they're beautiful. They are taught what kind of
behavior is wrong for all people, not just certain ones who I
think are perverts. As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, I
know a child molester can be the last person one would ever suspect.
You know something, I also want to know who will become sex
offenders. I also have a very nice stereo, so I'd like to know
who the once and future burglars are. We can't forget the people
who associate with them either, because they may also be a threat.
Actually, I want the government to tell me everything they know
about everyone. It's not going to happen unless it'll get someone
elected. Isn't that right, Madam Governor?
A version of "Megan's Law" has been signed into federal law
by the President. It is now the law of the land...
